The main problem I see with using an old such and such machine running such and
such software as a router, isn't that it is harder to setup, or may have to be
rebooted occasionally, but power consumption. My RealTek RT314 uses 7.5 watts
MAX. (7.5 volts x 1 Amp rating on power brick) An old IIfx or 486 or whatever
has a power supply that uses between 150-300 watts. It seems to me that $120
for the router will pay for itself in electricity costs alone, especially since
that extra heat from the extra computer will make the AC run a bit more. Plus I
am sure most of us have a finite amount of space in our homes, so it was well
worth the saved effort of setup, saved space, and electricty savings to lay out
one hundred and twenty bones for a nice little firewall/router with a built in 5
port 10/100 hub. By the time you shell out $90 for this software, get a second
ethernet card, get an AAUI transceiver, and get hub or swith for the network,
and then pay electrity costs for a few years, it seems to me that you are losing
money hand over fist, as well as having to manually set up the software.
If you still want to do this, there is a great guide at

One AWESOME advantage of IPNetRouter is you can share your internet connection
with MacIP using an ethernet to localtalk adaptor from farallon or asante, or
run the Laserwriter Ethernet Bridge software on another dedicated machine. The
upshot of this is you can have your old, non ethernet machines have email and
web access, even a mac plus! Of course I would spend the $80 or so on the
adaptor instead of running another machine 24/7 and burning up electricity like
it is going out of style.
