I use pretty much the same setup...it's a beootiful thing. Used Freesco now
use Coyote. The economic argument is a red herring. If you're a hardware
person at all there is something about taking a useless box and recycling
it. An old 486 box is the perfect platform for this as is Linix (or *BSD). I
bet this setup can toss packets with or better than the best $100+ buck
standalone router and is customizable way beyond the standalone boxen. No
contest re: performance vs. a Win PC or Mac running  software. My router is
also a web server, dialup server and print server and could be more. It's
not a bad thing to also learn some more about networking.
