Wow, thanks for the in-depth answer, Peter!

I  can confirm that the 6-32 screw is indeed not quite right. That's 
what it looked like to my eye, but when I tried to screw one in I found 
that the threads began to bind after a few turns, so I thought I'd 
better ask about it before screwing any further.
