WOW! High-tech stream of consciousness. James Joyce had nothing on you, Terry.

Cross-linked files should have been found and corrected by DiskWarrior or Norton.
Corrupted Finder prefs will not corrupt the Finder. Throw the Finder prefs in the
Trash and reboot the computer. The Finder will create a new prefs file when it
starts up. After Mac is completely up, empty the Trash. I'm still betting on the
battery, though. It's probably on its last legs. Symptoms of a bad battery are no
chime, date usually gets set back to August 27, 1956 (or 1904, depending on how old
the Mac and the OS are), color settings lost, and, in its final throws of death, the
display will go black.

The duplicate files...I don't know. Maybe corrupted disk directories. But
DiskWarrior should have fixed that. I suppose a power supply problem isn't out of
the question, but in my experience, unlikely. PCs are more susceptible to bad power
supplies than are Macs. Anyway, if you have access to a meter, you can check the
voltages coming out of the supply. You should have +5, +12, -5, and -12 volts
(within a tolerance of about 8%) on various pins of the connector.
