Zips were a great ideal, so it's a real shame they just are not ZIP was a triumph of marketing and low entry cost over good sense, reliability and reality. Sort of like Windows and DOS. If you like the convenience of ZIP but not the reliability problems, consider an overlooked technology which pre-dates ZIP--magneto optical disks. The 3.5" MO media is about the size of a ZIP disk and is much cheaper on a per MB basis and it's about as reliable as media can get. Consider that you pay $5 - $10 per 100 MB for ZIP. 640 MB MO cartridges cost about $15 - $20. True the drives are more expensive (Fujitsu makes some nice ones) but if you're going to use the things at all, the lower media cost easily makes up the drive cost. Plus, MO is a technology you can actually use, while ZIP is a cute curiosity that no-one can trust enough to actually store data on. The Fujitsu DynaMO is available in 1.3 GB format as well as 640 MB as of a year or two ago. I think the drives are in the neighborhood of $200 - $300.
