Well then, you ain't doin it right. ;-) End your frustration. The first thing
I did is make a boot up disk with the USB extension, as well as the other 3rd
party extensions (FW, G4 card, toast, etc.) so that when I boot from the CD,
I still have use of my optical mouse. (Oh, and technically, even if the mouse
IS optical, if it has a ball that needs to be cleaned, it's not an optical
mouse in my book) The whole point of an optical mouse is to not have to clean
the ball. Plus, my Mom's and my adb mice have the little pads worn off. I
don't suppose there are pad kits, are there? Yes, you can get a new adb
mouse, but what if you want two buttons, or three, or the scroll wheel? I
sure don't remember adb mice for $22 either. Seems like it was a whole lot
more. I'm not saying to get a USB card and mouse, but, you then have LOTS of
choices, not just in mice, but all the other things you can get for usb. It
isn't chepaer unless you count the card. There shouldn't be any frustration,
and I won't get into the convieniency factor. They don't have adb mice at any
of the computers stores I've been in.

Best part is, it's your choice. Live how you want. Buy what you want. Don't
buy what WE tell you to buy.

<< USB is great for pointing devices like mice and keyboards . . . unless your
machine doesn't have built-in USB. In my own experience, when I've had to
startup on an original system CD, I lose my USB devices and have to fall
back on my ADB devices. It could be my no-name USB card or it could be
because my old machine didn't come with built-in USB. Either way is
frustrating.
Against all the others here who are advising to go with getting a USB card
and mouse, I would say get another ADB mouse. You will actually save
yourself money and aggravation in the long run. You can get new ADB mice
reasonably priced from any number of sources and not have to rely on
questionable Ebay auctions.
I found a two-button (the ultimate sin in the Mac world ;->) Kensington ADB
mouse at Operator's Headgap (http://resale.headgap.com) for around $25. They
have a non-Apple ADB mouse for about $15 and an ADB mouse II for about $22.
Their prices often include shipping and they are super nice. >>
