#1  Call Maxtor and ask them for any suggestions first.
#2  Make sure it is not under warranty. If it is ..... next . . .
#3  The drive controller is probably dead. If it is under
      warranty, get the warranty drive sent, about 3-5 days,
      find someone with proficiency at doing this and switch
      boards. Make sure that they are the exact same boards!!!
      If this works, get your data off the drive, switch old card
      back and send junk drive back. If it don't work you've
      lost your data but now have a new drive. Don't open the
      or the warranty will not be any good. The warranty on
      these drives is usually 3 years. 1 year on a replacement.
      The IDE controller card actually unplugs from the drive
      up by the spindle so carefully unplug it! If all this hasn't
      worked, see #1.
