I fyou're staying away from an upgrade card because of extra software, dont. My XLR8/G4/450 will run without any extra software. It will be faster with the included extension, and options are available with the included control panel. But, if you didn't have any of the upgrades software, you'd never know it, except it might be slower.

I figure if I got a G3 card there would be extra software of some sort, and I'm trying to keep this thing as simple as possible. If he gets to the point where the 200Mhz is too slow, chances sre he'll know enough about the machine that an extra control panel or system extension isn't going to bother him.
