Ditto, I agree. While I have a certain fondness for my 8600 with a
G3/500/1meg, It's getting passed up by the stock beige G3/300. Although it
is close and the beige is running X. In 9.2.2, the beige is definetly
leaving the 8600 behind. It also depends what your definition of speed
is...and thats really all about bus speed.
You can go get the fastest processor upgrade, but if the info can't get
where it needs to go any faster than 40-50mhz(bus speeds for 8500), well how
much perfume you wanna put on a pig? In humans this dilema means you've
either got a form of dyslexia or you're drunk.

Seriously though, I believe the original question was: I'm thinking about
getting/making a machine for someone, how should I best spend my money
considering my budget. To this end, I recommend staying away from the
85/95's and the 86/96's altogether. I would suggest either a G3 mini tower
or a B&W, and I think the B&W would be the better choice. price range is
comparable, faster bus speed, you won't be kicking yourself for having a
machine with a scsi HD when you decide you want 20 gigs or more and the ATA
card is gonna run you $50-$100, and when you get the itch to go to OSX, you
won't get depressed when you realize that your machine isn't a "supported"
model. A B&W would get you way closer to the 21st century - my guess, new
years eve 1999 ? and that's before the upgrades.
