You're absolutely right. The Mac OS itself is remarkably stable. However, the Mac OS, plus tons of hardware, with their drivers, no proper SCSI termination, and a host of other unsupported extensions all running at the same time is not stable! I will say that I can and have run for weeks without a hiccup, just to see if I could. And how many crashes are my fault for <shift><command><esc>- ing when I got impatient?
I'm quite confident that I could use this computer as just a server, and leave it running for years, but I'm a hobbyist, and I just love to add dubious functionality to the computer. I hate having to specify extension startup packages; I like to startup once, and be able to use everything. Besides, if I have used Macs ever since 1987, and they have always had the occasional glitch, why should I be unhappy now? Sometimes, it's more trouble to try to fix a problem than to live with it. Everyone has their own threshold for that. I do, in hindsight, wish I had known this list existed when I had my G4 upgrade problems. It would have been interesting to see what had happened if I had put a bit more time into troubleshooting the SCSI chain. The nice thing is I was able to sell the card for $20 less than I bought it, which I thought was a perfect investment for that experiment. Of course, the problems may have still existed regardless. I read at that time that G3 and G4 upgrades for the 7300 were notoriously buggy, due to hardware vs. software corrections, or something like that. Some day, I'll just buy myself a new computer, and have fun giving that poor computer "personality." -Lavode > The Mac OS itself is remarkably stable! > "the occasional <xxx>" is unacceptable! -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
