Sound edit can also normalize gain, it is always good to record the 
input from a lower level than 0 db, that way you get the good spectra 
when you open it in some other sound editing - if the recording is to 
high from the start -  you won't be able to distinguish what is what 
when editing it,  will all be written  "outside the paper" , and it 
wont come back by normalizing the peak.  sadly
