Yeah, and I want a GOLD-PLATED.... well, never mind! ;-)

I know one day DSL will be as affordable and widely used as cellular, but not
now. This coming from a cellular user since '89 (when minutes were $33/min,.
peak w/o any freebies) and a mobile phone user (via my parents) since the
70's, when the hardware took up 1/2 of the trunk (of a CADDILAC!) and U had
to keep pressing a button to get a line..!

Anyway, I recently tried out DSL thru my cable subscriber, Charter. They
had(ve) a deal(?) where for $99/month, U get their top-of-the-line cable
package + three tv's in your house w/ basic cable AND DSL service (the
premium pkge alone was close to $90). I tried it out...then switched to a
$65/mth cable package w/ my favorite cable programs and NO DSL.

Why? Getting the DSL to work on my Pmacs was pretty easy, and I was about to
go spend $$ on a router and stuff, but then I realized that while the gain in
speed was great, it still was NOT JUSTIFIABLE for the money (even with the
added movie channels!).

I think of the analogy of putting a powerful fuel pump and a 100-gallon
gas-tank on a Yugo... U may have the ability to deliver more gas to the
engine & deliver it faster, but the fuel-injection can only take so much at a
time...

...and while my webpage graphics were coming up faster, it was like this:
BEFORE DSL, every 8 seconds FIVE nudie pics were loading up; WITH DSL, it was
15-18 pics, but STILL THAT EIGHT SECONDS of wait-time was present!

[The "nudie picts" reference was for humor ONLY, and should not be used to
judge the author's character in any way. "OF COURSE I only use the web to
download NFL stats and "Battlestar Galactica" cast mugshots!" -cw-]

So anyway, for my $$$, it was best for me to just continue using dial-up
until they either have cheap DSL, 500k modems, or I spend some more $$$ on a
Mac faster than 233mhz G3.

(C'mon, Technology!!)
