My tests were conducted using : http://computingcentral.msn.com/internet/speedtest.asp . (yep, I know it's MSN, but that's the only one I've found to use.) It is comparing Baud Rate, not BPS downloads.
My downloads show as 60 - 140 kbs with a Cox cable modem, as displayed on the download window. (The little box that opens when attempting a download. It displays a little bar graph and gives the speed vs time to complete the download.) The speed difference is usually due to the sending server's speed. (I have had some downloads go as slow as 10-15KBS and on occassion stall, which leads me to believe that I'm connected to a dial up or very busy server.) I have no idea how accurate the download window speed indicator is, but multi gig downloads in a minute or less are common. The same size downloads required 30 minutes to more than an hour with my 56k dial up. (The download window averaged 5 - 7 kbs with my old 56k dial up, which puts them about right as compared to other replies on this thread.
