Franz, I had two external Zip drives, both bought new and with the original
Zip adapters, and both became effected by the 'Click of Death' after several
months of use. I've never heard of the power adapters being involved with
this problem. Iomega replaced both drives, but many of my disks were ruined
because of the death click, and I lost a great deal of my work (I used the
Zips to back up and store some of my work, and that was a mistake).

I had read the warnings about putting the Zips too close to monitors and
thought it was yet another stupid excuse from Iomega, but it turned out that
reads from, and writes to the Zips became much more reliable when moved away
from the monitor (I had had the drives between the monitor and the tower of
the 9500).
