Very interesting. I have 4 zip drives. I have not kept track of which power brick came with which drive, and I wonder if the specs are different for any of them. One of the Zip drives was an Epson brand. One Iomega drive suffered the click of death.
Iomega changed brick manufacturers a number of times. As long as the brick is the right voltage and pumps the minimum current, it will work fine.
The drive problems described in Franz' message are NOT the Click Of Death. That was just what happens when you give a drive insufficient power. Kindof like putting economy gas in your souped up Porche.
The click-of-death is a real drive failure, characterized by a rhythmic LOUD clicking sound, and a thud/hum/scrapeing sound indicative of the head crash - which damages the ZIP disk.
I've gone through Zip disks at an alarming rate. Ten times the failure rate of floppies. I have a couple of dozen new Zip disks that I am afraid to use in any of the drives.
Ouch. Not normal. Have you contacted Iomega? They're very good about replacing bad disks.
