When I boot under 9.0.4, SCSIprobe shows 4 SCSI buses numbered 0-3:
    Apple Internal
    Apple External
    Adaptec 2930U
    UltraATA133
so that at least it all works as expected under 9.0.4. I don't know why its
not working under 9.1. Does anyone know of any incompatibilies
between the Tempo and some 9.1 extension (either Apple or 3rd party
since my system is quite large and complex)?

I saw a similar problem with the VST UltraTek/66 card when I had an Adaptec 2940U2B, or a JackHammer UW card installed. The machine simply would not boot into OS 9.1 but earlier OSs were fine. Very odd and very frustrating.

Try pulling the Adaptec card as an experiment. If the problem goes away, it's likely the same disease I observed. I found that the Adaptec 2940UW does not have this problem with the VST card, so changing SCSI cards might solve your problem.

Another thing I found when messing with this problem was that having a bootable CDROM in the CDROM drive alleviated the problem. I didn't boot from the CDROM, just having it present made a difference for some reason. Odd.

Of course, your problem may not be related to mine. However, this generation of machine has a serious firmware (ROM) bug with respect to PCI-PCI bridges, and since a PCI-PCI bridge is how the Tempo Trio makes one PCI slot look like three it is entirely possible that your problem is caused by the same firmware bug that I observed.
