After reconfiguring my Mac external and internal disk systems, I added a Sonnet Tempo Trio with a Maxtor 120GB IDE drive. I then could not get the system to boot off any hard disk until I removed the Tempo Trio card from the system. Now the system boots just fine w/o any other changes.
With the Tempo Trio in, the system hangs just at the Smiling Mac screen.
