7300 & 7600 machines are extremely inexpensive.
Get a 7300 or a 7600 or a 7500 from the swap list. These machines are much much much better for upgrading.
However, the B&W machine has a faster bus, and is better than the 7600 group. This does come at an increased cost.
And if you can afford it, a factory refurbished eMac can be bought at a surprisingly low cost from www.applestore.com At www.applestore.com, click on specials, on the lower left of the page. IIRC, there is an eMac w modem, but no CD writer, for about $600.

worked out I could install:
Sonnet G3 400
extra 256mb RAM (total then being 288mb)
ATI Radeon 7000 PCI video card
USB+Firewire card
Quantum 18.3GB 7200rpm SCSI HD
Would this make my mac a decent everyday computer for internet, MS Office
and listening to MP3s/watching downloaded DIVX movies? Or would it be a
better bet to find a b/w G3 tower and spend a little money on that?
Also, would the above config run OS X ok?
