I tried Farallon drivers, Kingston, Sonnett and 
SMC with that card and none of them worked. They 
just didn't pick it up.

It's worth noting that the DEC based card should 
work on the Mac. Have a
look at the Farralon (farallon?) drivers. IIRC a 
lot of their cards are DEC
based.

Have you tried finding DEC12040 drivers for 
MacOS? They may be included with
the full OS. If it helps, the DEC21x4x chipset 
seems to also be known as
Tulip (at least in the Linux world.)
