Accidentally, I got myself into a fix with XPostFacto such that I had to
remove the system battery to clear the CMOS memory.

Well until I did the battery thing, the cursor speed in Outlook Express 5
while editing received mail items (I often edit down mailing list digests to
remove clutter) under 8.6 was fantastic; I really felt glad I had invested
in the G4/800. Now, however, the cursor performance seems about almost as
slow as it was before I got the G4/800.

When you pulled the PRAM battery you dumped the mouse control preferences. Go into the mouse control panel and reset everything.
