Does Safari have an email component? And it works in X only? I have heard
Safari is great.

Re X, Roger and OE (Outlook Express email), this reminds me: are you running
in what when this slowdown happens? In 8.6 itself or in X with this classic
on? I was assuming in 8.6 or 9. If in classic, though, I'd say keeping the
OE database in lean compacted shape is even more important to lessen the
load. I have a friend with an imac G3 400 and also a lampshade imac G4 (800
I think) which he complains about in respect to the slowness of the emulator
(Classic) compared to running in 9 (native for most of his apps). And my
truly limited experience of these G4's is that they are not so fast in
Classic. Classic would have to be a very clever program, but it would have
to also have a lot of overheads (My friend's son has a G5, top one and the
problems of speed in Classic largely disappear, he says)
