IMO, unless you want to invest $$$ up front, buy the cheapest inkjet printer you can. Include the cost of ink cartridges in your purchase decision! Check for generic cartridges. If no generic cartridge is available, don't buy the printer. Few inkjets will last more than a year or so under average use, so the more expensive ones are just not worth it.

Currently, I use HP DeskWriter, Epson 740 and C60 printers connected to an Axis Print Server. That off-loads most of the speed problem. I reink carts for the DeskWriter myself and buy generic G&G brand cartridges for the Epsons ($5 to $8 each at computer shows).

If you're willing to cough up some real $... then laser or wax sublimation is the way to go. They're more expensive up front, but the per-page cost is much lower than inkjet.
