So it seems; however, as I reported to this list earlier, my experience is
different. In my PM8500/120 with a Belkin USB card, despite the presence of
a driver appropriate to the OS version (9.1), despite the presence of the
latest Apple USB extension (1.4.1), despite visibility of the printer in
Apple System Profile and even in the HP Utility software, _the driver would
not load_ -- it just hung the system. After many hours of ringing the
changes on various workarounds, the results were exactly the same. When I
told this to HP, their response was, "We don't support non-built-in USB, or
processors less than G3, for our current line of printers."

The Epsons might be different in practice, but the party line is essentially
the same.

I'm just trying to avoid another debacle like I had with the HP. I am
looking for specific information about USB printer models and driver
versions that work in PCI Macs with stock processors. Though I understand
the urge to give general assurances that there "should[n't] be *any*
issues", it isn't really helpful in light of my experience that there _can
be_ issues.

What might help me is to know the printer model and driver version you used
with the 604 processor. I would appreciate hearing...

Thanks.
