At an Apple financial analyst conference on Wednesday CEO Steve Jobs admitted that Apple makes no revenue from the online download service, the iTunes Music Store, that he launched in April. As iTMS is the leading download service, with 80 per cent market share (or so Jobs claimed), where's your 99 cents per song going?
As has been repeatedly said by all parties involved...the current aim of the iTMS is not to turn a profit, but show the recording industry that the process works and to sell iPods for Apple.
This is going to be the downfall of the *for profit* companies like Napster, because they aren't getting better deals from the labels than Apple is, I'm sure.
