This is interesting, the advantages of IDE being? Cost, bigger available HDs?
What about speed? I have been thinking for some time of getting faster HDs
(all mine are very standard (I think 7200 rpm) including an 18G one that I
decided to keep outside in a box because of its heat. I take it that a PCI
card is needed, easy to get? How much? And an IDE HD can be the startup disk
in a set up that includes SCSI ones I assume?

Cost and size of IDE drives are definitely a plus. Speed on these PCI Macs is
likely comparable considering the 33 MHz PCI slot and 50 MHz bus limitation.

The best sustained read/write data transfer rates I could attain were about
20 MB/sec with an ATTO UL/2D LVD SCSI card and a pair of WD 18 GB LVD drives
attached with all the appropriate cabling in my G3/466 equipped 7500.

I suspect a good IDE card with appropriate hard drives would perform as well.

The other consideration is reliably. I have heard SCSI's are more resistant
to drive failure; another question to consider.

Well, I'm not filled with confidence. I want it to be faster than what I
have. But no less reliable.

and thirdly the ATA 66 card that I have doesnt work well with all
motherboards, you get staggering audioplay from the ide drives
on some NOT ALL powermacs - this is not occuring to any specific
model, sometimes it does sometimes not, I have an 8500 and a 7500 in
the attic that couldnt take it, unless you use software to lower the
ide diskspeed, and that just makes it strange. I have various
7300,7600, 7500 that CAN function with soundfiles without any
 problems.
the ATA 133 or 100 is said to not have this disadvantage.
If you work with soundfiles and only have one mac to fit it in stick
 with a factory new 133 ?

I also use an LG burner on my ATA 66 card priced about 60 dollars,
 and it works great.

So, "get an ATA 133 or ATA 100 card" is a rule I should remember if I decide to go IDE and look on eBay?

yes if you are going to work with soundfiles on that ide it might be wise, it seems that
used ata 66 cards are hard to come by so, its not too tricky. my 66 ata pcicard was about 110 dollars
the ide 40 gb disk about 100 dollars and the burner about 60 dollars, all of that stuff was new with warranty, and
free support. Now you can get a better pci card for about the same price new.
