Replacing my startup SCSI drive with an ATA133 drive was perhaps the best
speed improvement made on my 9500.

I use both an SIIG ATA133 controller card, and another brand as well (can't
remember the name off-hand).  Both can be used for startup drives, and the
SIIG is OSX compatable (although I'm not using X at this time, just 8.6 -
9.2)

The SIIG card was about $80US new, and the other is an ATA66 card bought off
eBay for about $40.  Great investments.  I even use cheap PC CD-ROM burners
now, connected to one of the ATA cards.
