Yes it is cheap to get a firewire card, but no, that does not mean that the machine can be booted in FW target mode, only certain models can be booted into TDM. <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583>
You can do it the other way 'round, of course, booting the new iMac in FW TM connected to the old Mac; just be careful where you stick things, if the old mac is running OS9; don't mess with the System folder on the iMac (an not there are two: System and System Folder, the first s the OSX system folder, the second is the system folder for Classic on the iMac.
