Jeff writes in praise of these machines;
I read three different written pieces today about these "killer" Macs and how they slash you alive when you try to work on them.
For the sake of rebuttal, I've owned many 8500s and now one 9500 and here's how I simplify getting to the RAM, cache and battery:
Disconnect all cords.
Remove the case.
Remove the reset/programmer's switch.
Remove the phillips screw from the center of the motherboard.
Slide the motherboard forward.
Flip the motherboard, with cables still attached, up and over the top of the computer.
Work away.

Jeff, it sounds like you have a good method for handling these machines. I admire your " can-do " attitude.
But I gave up on the 8500 I had. Troubleshooting RAM DIMMs was pure torture.
The "suitcase " Macs ( 7x00 ) and 8600-9600 Macs are a pleasure to service and only take half as much or less time to
do any operation of hardware change or service.
it's just so .
