A 233 MHz card may indeed work, but a 233 MHz card marked "9600 Only" will not work, just as a cache card marked "7200 Only DOS OK" will work in a 7200 (DOS Compatibility Card or not), but it won't work in a 7300 or 7500 or 7600, etcetera. First-generation 8600/9600 machines included all up to, and including 233 MHz. 233 MHz card from, say, a 9600 which is NOT marked "9600 Only" will work in any 8600 or a 7500, etcetera. Second-generation 8600/9600 machines included 250, 300, 350 and 400 MHz machine, but there were no 400 MHz machines made. Only a Mach V card will work in a Mach V machine; only a non-Mach V card will work in a non-Mach V machine. PCC 225 MHz cards don't always work in pre-Mach V Macs. 250 MHz cards from Umax don't always work in pre-Mach V Macs. Any 250 MHz or faster card from Apple will be a Mach V card.
