Again, not true. The 233 MHz Apple cards work. The 250 MHz cards from
PowerComputing and Umax work. These cards do not have the inline cache.
The only cards that DON'T work are the 250 MHz, 300 MHz and 350 MHz
"Kansas, MachV" cards that do have the inline cache. These cards came in
the second generation 8600's and 9600's. The first generation 8600's had
200 MHz 604e cards and the first generation 9600's had 233 MHz 604e
cards. These cards will also work in a 7500, 7600 and 7300. This topic
has been beat to death for years on this list.
A 233 MHz card may indeed work, but a 233 MHz card marked "9600 Only"
will not work, just as a cache card marked "7200 Only DOS OK" will work
in a 7200 (DOS Compatibility Card or not), but it won't work in a 7300 or
7500 or 7600, etcetera.
First-generation 8600/9600 machines included all up to, and including 233
MHz. 233 MHz card from, say, a 9600 which is NOT marked "9600 Only" will
work in any 8600 or a 7500, etcetera.
Second-generation 8600/9600 machines included 250, 300, 350 and 400 MHz
machine, but there were no 400 MHz machines made.
Only a Mach V card will work in a Mach V machine; only a non-Mach V card
will work in a non-Mach V machine.
PCC 225 MHz cards don't always work in pre-Mach V Macs. 250 MHz cards
from Umax don't always work in pre-Mach V Macs.
Any 250 MHz or faster card from Apple will be a Mach V card.
Certain third party accelerators, NewerTech's so-called "400 MHz" MP
card, for example, and most third-party G3 cards, are both non-Mach V and
Mach V, but with some differences in switch settings.
Peter, I have a 233 MHz 604e card marked "9600 Only" running in a 7500
as we speak. The 9600 was upgraded to a G3/300 long a go and the pulled
card landed in the 7500 and has been running that way since 1999 running
DNS and ftp.
