Hey Clint.....I totally agree with you that anyone who isn't running updated AV programs is truly asking for trouble......vi*ii are not just coming from email lately
case in point......I am running a contest on my website right now for Swish software.......the owners of Swish sent me a link to a page they had just set up for me so they could monitor the traffic I sent to them.....so, I went to the page and BAM......McAfee flagged it as being infected with nim*a. (*=d)......so, I contacted them immediately and it turns out the machine where they produced the page was INDEED infected and they were VERY greatful to me for alerting them......so, even the old theory of staying away from sites that are not trustworthy doesn't work anymore......this ain't just happening at porn sites......Swish is a VERY respectable site and they handled this very well, in my opinion, as soon as I notified them my point is that if I was not running uptodate dats, I would have been infected for sure....and God knows how many others would have gotten infected by clicking on a link AT MY WEBSITE......and that would not have made me very popular also.....to Barry......yes, you can add calendar and contact features to another program and use Eudora or some other program for your email.....you can even use Eudora, etc. for your mail and setup Outlook as a no-mail version and just use the calendar, journaling, etc. features from Outlook without the email......BUT, the problem is that then all of the automatic features of Outlook must be done manually......for example, in Outlook when one of my clients requests an appt, etc......all I need to do is "accept" the appointment and all the info is automatically added to my calendar and logged in my journal for that client.....all I do is hit the "accept" button in the email.......if I was using multiple programs for this (which I HAVE tried to do), this requires lot of copy/pasting and takes me WAY more time to accomplish what I can do in Outlook automatically.....like I said, the only other program that allows for this functionality is Lotus Notes, but it is a bear to configure for the Internet and I would then have to tell all of my clients to switch over to Notes, which is totally unreasonable Linda Linda's Computer Stop http://www.personal-computer-tutor.com/ Editor, ABC ~ All 'Bout Computers http://www.personal-computer-tutor.com/ABC.htm Online Instructor, Eclectic Academy http://www.eclecticacademy.com/index.htm -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] -Clint Hamilton Sent: Monday, November 05, 2001 10:08 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: PCWorks: Antiviral programs (4th attempt @ post in over 3 hrs.) Not anymore. You've just been very lucky. Several times lately I have gotten vir*ses JUST by VISITING webpages (Norton protected me though). Nothing at all has to be done. They are imbedding malicious code within the HTML of webpages. No amount of 'common sense' or safe computing can protect you from those other than an updated AV program, and then you may not always be safe. Even worse, is the fact that gif images can now be 'infected' (for lack of a better term). I posted this info at some other email lists, but was met with ridicule because many thought I was lying or making it up, so I did not post it here. But, it IS indeed true.
