Kelly, Not sure exactly how you mean headers, other than when you want to see what messages are now in the newsgroups. When I look in the .snm file(s) for the newsgroups, what I have always found is that they contain a list of newsgroups of active or inactive newsgroups I subscribe(d) to as well as which messages in each group I have already looked at - that is all.
The biggest problems I have had in the past with Communicator when compared to Navigator was: 1) There always seemed to be a MAJOR problem with the sent folder in email - initially it would never end up showing up right, always showing my email address instead of the person's email address I had sent the email to. The ONLY way I have gotten around this particular problem was to delete the sent folder, and then create a new folder named SENT, and then place all my previous sent emails in this new folder. Then it seems to be correct, with showing the person's email address instead of mine, unlike all the other email folders. 2) I have found NO easy way of importing my address book from 3.04 into 4.x, since Communicator seems to use a totally different address book format than was used previously. The easiest way I have found of dealing with this problem was to import my 3.04 address book into Outlook Express, and then import my address book from OE into 4.x - this seems totally crazy/screwy a way to have to do this, but it was the easiest way of handling this one. 3) With regard to bookmarks/favorites issues, since I use both Netscape and Microsoft, was to use one of the best programs for exchanging back and forth between the 2 formats - unfortunately, I am at work when I write this message, and the program I use is on my home computer. BUT the author seems to offer free upgrades to it for quite some time now, which is very nice, and it works VERY nicely in getting bookmarks/favorites coordinated back and forth betwen the 2 programs. On this issue, I find it quite surprising that Netscape, when they wrote Communicator, did not have a sort capabilty for bookmarks, unlike the previous versions of Netscape, or that you find in Internet Explorer. 4) With regard to newsgroups, even when I would tell to display ONLY unread messages, Messenger would STILL, it seems, display ALL message headers, whether read or unread, which I found VERY frustrating, to say the least. On a different note, I have found it interesting, that Microsoft, when you are dealing with Outlook Express, does NOT give you a choice of display formats for where the various panes are located on the screen, unlike Netscape - by this I mean if you go into preferences in Communicator, you get a choice of displaying 2 panes across the top, with the message displayed across the screen on the bottom, or to have the groups displayed top to bottom on the left, with the list of messages and individual messages themselves showing on the right panes. In OE, you dont seem to have any choice of how things will be displayed - groups displayed top to bottom on the left, and messages and individual mesages displayed on the right. I personally perfer to have the groups and listing of messages showing in the top panes, and the full message displaying on the bottom. Not sure if you or others have found answers for the issues I have presented, but if you have, would appreciate your findings and results/solutions to the issues. In fact, I would strongly suggest that you turn it off. Netscape 3.04 does indeed download headers to your computer. If you close communicator and delete the .snm file associated with a newsgroup, you'll find that you will have to download all of the headers again. Netscape 4.7x (the latest is 4.79) handles newsgroups the same way. Answers to common Netscape problems can be found at http://www.ufaq.org/ (the PC FAQ's section). If no joy, there are links to Netscape's secure server peer-support newsgroups. -- Kelly Younger ============= PCWorks Mailing List ================= Don't see your post?
