When you click on a newsgroup, the headers are downloaded to your computer. When you click on a header, that message is downloaded so you can view it. The .snm files are "summary" files which keep track of headers , read/unread messages etc. Don't ask me how they work, I haven't a clue. What's contained in the .snm files is junk that is used by the OS to fill space. Actually, this is done by the OS and not Netscape. If you open an .snm file with WIN 95 or 98, there will be recognizable words and sentences. WIN 2000, NT and, I assume, XP display gibberish as does the Mac and Unix/Linux versions. (An interesting aside...once a guy reported in a Netscape newsgroup that he had opened an .snm file and found portions of an email his wife had sent to her "friend".) Kelly, Well, from what I found, there are 2 different snm files - one that contains the info about each server you use for newsgroups, as well as an snm file for each server containing the individual newsgoup info, such as if active or not, as well as all messages that were previous looked at. In 3.04, the address book was in HTML format. See if this works...Open 4.xx, go to address book and File|Import. Select Communicator Address Book, then next. In the "Files as Type" box, select HTML and browse to your address book file and "Open". Does this not work for you? If not, it appears as though you've found a suitable, but indeed "crazy/screwy", workaround. I agree. Why they left the "Sort by Name" capability out is beyond me. Since you have 3.04, you *can* use that to sort by name. Just copy your 4.xx bookmarks to 3.04 and sort. Copy back to 4.xx. Always keep a backup. This puzzles me. Are you talking about 4.7x? If so, go to View|Messages and check "Unread" (or the more popular "Threads with Unread"). This should display what you want. If it does not, the .snm file for that group may be corrupt. Close Communicator and delete the .snm file for that group. You will have to re-download all headers and reset your preferences (View, Show etc.) for that group.
