When you click on a newsgroup, the headers are downloaded to your computer. When you click on a header, that message is downloaded so you can view it. The .snm files are "summary" files which keep track of headers , read/unread messages etc. Don't ask me how they work, I haven't a clue. What's contained in the .snm files is junk that is used by the OS to fill space. Actually, this is done by the OS and not Netscape. If you open an .snm file with WIN 95 or 98, there will be recognizable words and sentences. WIN 2000, NT and, I assume, XP display gibberish as does the Mac and Unix/Linux versions. (An interesting aside...once a guy reported in a Netscape newsgroup that he had opened an .snm file and found portions of an email his wife had sent to her "friend".) > The biggest problems I have had in the past with Communicator when compared > to Navigator was: > > 1) There always seemed to be a MAJOR problem with the sent folder in email > - initially it would never end up showing up right, always showing my email > address instead of the person's email address I had sent the email to. I seem to remember that "annoyance" in earlier versions, but it does it correctly here in 4.79. Is that the version you're using? I agree though, that was stupid. > 2) I have found NO easy way of importing my address book from 3.04 into > 4.x, since Communicator seems to use a totally different address book > format than was used previously. In 3.04, the address book was in HTML format. See if this works...Open 4.xx, go to address book and File|Import. Select Communicator Address Book, then next. In the "Files as Type" box, select HTML and browse to your address book file and "Open". Does this not work for you? If not, it appears as though you've found a suitable, but indeed "crazy/screwy", workaround. > 3) With regard to bookmarks/favorites issues, since I use both Netscape and > Microsoft, was to use one of the best programs for exchanging back and > forth between the 2 formats - unfortunately, I am at work when I write this > message, and the program I use is on my home computer. I agree. Why they left the "Sort by Name" capability out is beyond me. Since you have 3.04, you *can* use that to sort by name. Just copy your 4.xx bookmarks to 3.04 and sort. Copy back to 4.xx. Always keep a backup. > 4) With regard to newsgroups, even when I would tell to display ONLY unread > messages, Messenger would STILL, it seems, display ALL message headers, > whether read or unread, which I found VERY frustrating, to say the least. This puzzles me. Are you talking about 4.7x? If so, go to View|Messages and check "Unread" (or the more popular "Threads with Unread"). This should display what you want. If it does not, the .snm file for that group may be corrupt. Close Communicator and delete the .snm file for that group. You will have to re-download all headers and reset your preferences (View, Show etc.) for that group. > On a different note, I have found it interesting, that Microsoft, when you > are dealing with Outlook Express, does NOT give you a choice of display > formats for where the various panes are located on the screen, unlike > Netscape - by this I mean if you go into preferences in Communicator, you > get a choice of displaying 2 panes across the top, with the message > displayed across the screen on the bottom, or to have the groups displayed > top to bottom on the left, with the list of messages and individual > messages themselves showing on the right panes. Others on the list may find limited usefulness in this discussion.
