All I did was right click the file and uncheck 'read only' then removed that problem line, and it booted up OK this time with no hook. Thanks Keith. (Still flabbergasted on what could cause this! :-) Since the only other area where there is an msdos.sys file is in the adaptec folder (even though that file is BLANK), I guess that software *could* be the cause of it, but it's never done that before on any other format/installation! Does anyone think that Adaptec's "Take Two" software (backup software, does a 'mirror image' of the HD that can be restored from DOS via boot disk) could have caused this? It is installed as part of ECDC 5 Platinum, and it was partially run as a 'test' on this PC, but NOT FULLY run. Still, the same was done on my other HD and it still did not have this 'hook'.
