Keith, With regard to attributes, I still use various Dos Utilities from the last release of Norton Utilities, when it was still a Dos based package. And of the programs is FA (file attributes) - it lets you change any and all attributes of any file in a location, either set or reset, including using /CLEAR to get rid of all attributes of all the specified files.
I will, after an install, normally run FA in true dos mode and get rid of all attributes of every file on my system, and have found the settings dont make any differences of the files working/accesable or not. IF Windows needs to make a new version, such as backup of the registry, it will and the file(s) of that item will have the normal windows attributes for the file(s).
