Clint, Well, I have seen problems with Adaptec's version of packet writing software found in Direct CD.
BUT a bigger problem I have had in the past, which is one reason I HAD to find alternative CD creation software to Adaptec's, was that I had several programs that would get loaded into memory when windows started, and would show up in the lower right icon tray area. These were programs that I had bought and had various functions - one was a scheduling program that was very nice. The problem I found was that Adaptec's software, whether you were talking EZ CD Creator and/or Direct CD, no matter which version you were talking about, would work with these programs loaded. On the other hand, I had absolutely NO problem running Nero or other creator programs with the scheduling program and others loaded and running in the background. You might want to look into stomp's software: http://www.stompinc.com/index.phtml?stp They now care a wide variety of software related to CDs - not only Veritas's Backup My PC, but RecordNow Max and various others. In fact, in the section deaing with RecordNow Max, they do a comparition of features of their product with both EZCD and Nero (http://store.yahoo.net/stompstore/recordnowmax.html). As far as dealing with Direct CD, DLA, and similar software, the whole basis of the program was originally intended for CD-RW type CDs, rather than CD-R, since it was meant to give you the ability of making the CD like an external hard drive storage media. Since you can erase CD-RWs, it made their use more in line with the idea of a hard drive. Guess I'll know soon if it works for me or not. I haven't tried it yet, but there is a way to 'test' the backup to make sure it's good and it will indeed restore the HD. Yeah, I've heard all sorts of bad things about adaptec's ECDC, but it's all I've ever used and never had any problems with it as long as I used the updates. I hated Nero, NTI, CD Clone, etc. Guess I'm just not used to their interface. Also, you can't even use a cdR disk with Nero's packet writing, only a cdRW disk. 90% of the time I use DCD, I hardly ever use ECDC and DCD has no 'interface', I like the way you can simply drag files to the cdrw drive's shortcut icon on the desktop, or right click and 'send to cdrw drive'. I haven't had any problems with ECDC either since I started using a burn proof drive. Guess it just depends on what one is used to and what you learned on. :-) What is the company or URL (and $) of that software that works in DOS? BTW, all I did was deleted that line from msdos.sys and that worked ok. Hook no longer there. I'd still like to know how that happened! So a LOT seems to be involved with this issue. So I think it boils down to uninstalling Take Two off your system, if you have it installed, and install a good backup package, such as Veritas/Stomp, NTI, or a similar program. By the way, NTI now a deluxe backup that lets you backup systems in 95, 98, ME, 2K, and XP. And found the other day a commerical company, which I have the URL of at work, and I am writing this at home, which produces software to make CDs not only in Windows but in Dos as well. This is the first time that I can recall that I have seen a commercial package to produce CDs of all kinds in a Dos environment, including system backups. It does not seem to do compression of the data, but I could be wrong on that. And I think, if I am not mistaken, to properly handling the long file name issue of windows file names - meaing it can save not just the file with the 8.3 file name but the windows long file name as well, so if restored, windows can work properly.
