That makes a lot more sense, Alan. I just didn't think you could be using an uplink to connect a computer to the hub. When uplink is turned on it does change the pin outs on the cabling and is usually used to connect to another hub or switch. I think your problem is in the security settings for your WinXp machines. Have you disabled simple file sharing on the WinXP machines? Have you created shared drives or folders on the WinXP machines? You also need to create user accounts on the WinXP computers.
