Yeah, I know what you describe, that's what I had to do for a
while. Sounds like you don't have a router, but a hub. If it
is a TRUE *Router*, then you just need to do a bit more
configuring. It's been years since I did it and I can't recall
the steps. It may be something as simple as checking a box or
boxes that state something like 'remain connected' or 'always
dial this connection' and 'remember user and password',
something along those lines. Heck it could be "never dial a
connection". I don't even have a DUN (Dial Up Networking)
folder anymore or a "Modem" in the Control Panel, and under IE
Options and "Connections" is blank but "never dial a
connection" is dotted, but cannot be changed.

If you went from dialup to DSL without reformatting, that could
be the issue or one of the issues. The PC still wants to
"dialup & connect" the same way it was doing with the dialup
modem and I had all kinds of problems with that, until I
reformatted. I think it could be the router, and yours not
being a real router, or you don't have it set to always be 'on'
or connected. Like I said, it's been years, but I THINK I
remember entering my ISP's user and pass in the router's
control panel and checking for it to always remember it, and
that was *it*. I can install a new HD, or reformat and the
instant my NIC's drivers are installed, I'm online immediately,
never have to change, set or configure anything ever. Exactly
like cable.

Oh, I'm leaving out one main thing, and that is this is only
with an Ethernet DSL modem. I don't think you can do this with
a USB or PCI DSL modem. I used both of those once and the best
I could do was place the "pseudo dialup dialogue" window in the
"Start Up" folder so as soon as the Desktop loaded, all I had
to do was hit [Enter] on the keyboard and I was online
immediately. But with the router, and Ethernet modem there
isn't any "connection number" that has to be entered.

Sorry for the "open thought" post! I haven't sleep in a about
a day and half so I'm rambling now. :-) Bottom line is, with
an Ethernet DSL modem and a router, it's exactly like cable.

Well, it's not a true dial-up, I'll give you that... But I'm
not immediately connected as soon as my desktop loads.. I have
to
click on an icon on my desktop in order to connect to the
net... Different from my cable when I had it where it was on
as soon as
my computer booted... But, yes, the router flashes it's little
green light when it's connected right and an orange light if
something wrong... Don't all DSL's do that? I've never had
any other account other than this one (bellsouth)... I have to
configure it one time, do you mean the very first time I put
the account info and stuff in? Then you are right...
