David, in your connection properties dialog window under the Networking tab you can uncheck the check box to have XP not use TCP/IP. Then restart the system to make it effective.

Otherwise then it may be as Jorge says, a failing modem. Is your modem internal or external?

Hello, Peter,

My ISP sets the DNS dynamically.

How do I remove and re-install the TCP/IP protocol?

The fact is that I dial up and work with no problems for some time, until
the dialer locks up. Doesn't that mean that the protocol is set correctly?
