And how stable is the connection now?

Does it hold out for the duration of your time online or does it still quit responding?

Do you know what modem you use? Brand and model?

The device manager will only judge the present state of the modem, so the unit could fail and the device manager would not know better.

After removing the check box for TCP/IP and restarting the computer as you
suggested, I
received the following message: "Cannot connect the phonebook entry. Error
720: A connection to the remote computer could not be established. You might
need to change the network settings for this connection....

I checked the box for TCP/IP again, rebooted the computer, and was able to
make the dialup connection.
