What type of memory is installed in your computer, and who is the vendor?
Is the phone cord from your computer a single line or is it many smaller cables strung together? Do you have a splitter on the phone cord?
If you use a product like Aida32 you can usually detect what modem you have and who the vendor is, http://www.aida32.hu/aida32-download.php.

Peter, I downloaded my e-mail and prepared my comments, but when I was ready to Send/Receive, there was no response. Again, the little modem icon shows that all is well! I had to reboot in order to send this message.
I have a generic 56K modem.
