It's an internal modem, Peter. Device Manager says (for whatever it's worth) "This device is working properly."
After removing the check box for TCP/IP and restarting the computer as you suggested, I received the following message: "Cannot connect the phonebook entry. Error 720: A connection to the remote computer could not be established. You might need to change the network settings for this connection.... I checked the box for TCP/IP again, rebooted the computer, and was able to make the dialup connection.
