Another take on this thread. First, an acquaintance many years ago who had
some government connections, insisted that the NATSB or some such had
obtained clearance to have super computers monitoring EVERY telephone
conversation in America and flagging and recording conversations that had
certain keywords in them, so later analysis could be done. I now have grave
doubts because if that had been true, it is unlikely the Oklahoma City
bombing could have been pulled off.

Second, I don't care. I have my own revenge for anyone who is listening into
my fone conversations or reading my email or following my web surfing. I
deliberately work at boring them to death.

Think of the logistics. over 240,000,000 people (I don't know the latest
census count) in America talking and mailing and using the Internet. How
many of those people would it take working full time to make any
comprehensive compilation of all that data? What they are able to deduce
from spybots and so forth is annoying to us, but not all that intrusive.
Obviously some search machines are able to pick up certain phrases and zero
in on them. It is the cost of living in a high tech society.

On the other hand, the people around you probably know far more about you
(much of it misinformation) than you can imagine. And it has little to do
with sales tracking and fone tapping. It has always been that way, and
always will be. Privacy is more of a mutual illusion than a reality. Our
society goes to great pains to pretend we know less about each other than we
really do.

The healthy thing to do is live your life. You will be OK, and while all
this snooping is going on, perhaps some terrorist will be caught. Perhaps
even some misinformation about you will be corrected without you even
knowing. It is not all bad.
