That's a common misconception.  Zeiss pioneered lens coating and marked 
many of their single-coated lenses with a red T .  Many firms experimented 
with multicoating, but had problems getting the layers to adhere to one 
another and to be tough enough to withstand cleaning.

Zeiss people will openly tell you that they got the basic multicoating
process from Pentax, even though they modified it to meet their requirements
before calling it T*.

Zeiss people say T* and HFT are identical, Rollei people insist that they
are not.
