As a guy who uses Nikons professionally and Pentaxes for fun I can tell
you that Nikon guys do complain about it, or rather did since it is old
news now. There are two subtle differences, however.

1) You can still buy Nikon film and digital cameras that use the old
lenses with full functionality. They are the expensive pro models, but
that makes some sense as the guys with expensive old pro lenses that they
would like to keep using with new cameras are usually pros. Most folks
don't really have a great investment in lenses and are seduced by newer
zoom lenses anyway. Of course PDML types are probably exceptions to
this...

2) There are very few lenses that Nikon ever made that they don't still
make in an equivalent or better (if often more expensive) version.
Granted, this doesn't inherantly help you use any older nikon lenses you
may have with new "crippled" cameras, but it does mean that you can buy
a newer version that will work. The "flaw", as it were in the argument
that Pentax is trying to make it impossible for you to use your old
lenses so that you buy new ones is that in some cases Pentax no longer
makes anything that looks like a replacement.
