I had the Sigma 24/2.8 too in PKA (MF) mount few years ago. It was a great lens optically, but was disappointed by its built quality. Yes, its body is metal, but the rubber ring, the contact pins & plastic aperture ring were wearing in no time. Never seen any lens had so much wear in such rate (less than 1 year). Oh... it flares like hxll too. But really, visually, it takes sharper pictures than the FA*24/2.

Two friends of mine have Sigma 24/2.8 lens - one for Pentax AF mount, another for Minolta mount. The pictures I've seen are not bad at all. Especially if one takes into account price difference between Sigma and similar native lens. Also construction of this very lens is very good. It is mostly metal and it is sturdy.

Naturally, this is yet another bit of anecdotal evidence...

And of course, if one faces the choice between not having a certain lens (focal length) all together and a reasonably 3rd party offer, I think it is really no-brainer... At least so it seems for me... Humbly of course...
