In case of Photoshop you should have three times free memory as edited image
file. In case of work on layers, you will need even more. Here fast HDD
(RAID level 0 at best) is important, as often 1GB of RAM is not enough.

For most photo retouching works it should be sufficient, althought full
Photoshop has some very nice extras, that make life just easier. I couldn't
work with Elements simply because I have been working with full Photoshop
since version 2.5 :-)
