All the above is my personal understanding, and if I'm wrong, the real experts here will correct me in a hurry! <grin>

Experts? Hmmm. I shouldn't answer then, I guess...

My understanding is that after the original M42 Takumar lenses were discontinued, the Takumar brand was used for some of the K-mount equipment, and these items where generally lower-quality.

That does seem to be a common belief.
I guess it comes from the fact that if SMC coatings were available, but the K-mount Takumar lenses didn't have them, they MUST have been of lower quality all around.
Maybe so.

were without coating is another question. I've been thinking that they must have *some* kind if not "SMC", but perhaps not...

One of the references I just read this morning said that _all_ Takumar lenses were "coated."
This is, of course, referring to production between 1954 (?) and 1975, but only the 1971 to 1975 lenses were SMC coated.
However, even tho' they were all coated, it took the sophistication of the SMC coatings to raise transmissibility from something like 42%, up to beyond 98%!
I'll dig up the actual numbers if anyone cares, but that's essentially accurate.

I actually have a Takumar-A 2X Teleconverter...
