Hmmm... To some extend this is right for me too.
But I guess I just got used to all the nice features - sofisticated Matrix
metering (I rarely have to make corrections anymore with the MZ-S - *istD.
I
did with the PZ-1) ....
Is it just that people handle their gear differently, or is Pentax quality really inconsistent between different individual samples of the same model?

And then there was the comment about the PZ-1's lack of sealing. Someone's camera quit in a drizzle. I've had my PZ-1 since Christmas 1995 and used it professionally in various weather conditions and at least twice in situations near waterfalls where I had to wipe the spray off the front of the lens between shots (all shots). Rain. Freezing cold. Humid tropical beaches. <snip>
This is a general question, since there's also the big difference between people who've found the LX a wonderfully reliable instrument and others whose experience seems to be that it requires repair more frequently than any other camera.
It's also a straight question, not an attempt at sarcasm or trying to stir up arguments.

Eleanor,
I think that there is quite a range in samples. I have noted the same thing concerning other manufacturers. It is quite normal to hear complaints, think how boring if everyone just wrote to say that everything is wonderful :-)
Look at my LXen. The only troubles I have had with them is due to my interaction with the cameras. I have only had one (I own five) that has had the 'sticky mirror' problem. I even took it into my store to show the sales clerks, it was such a novelty. Yet there are others who have plenty of horror stories about them. Neither of us are lying.
My Super Program (original Pentax and purchased new) finally went in for service (with rust showing on the body) after many years of service and including a finger going through the shutter (Yosemite - it forced me to only use the LX for that trip - fixed the problem the next day) without a complaint.
I have had three of my new cameras go in for warranty work, but have heard from my store that they have a lot less Pentax go in for warranty work than the others.
Even my Optio S has taken abuse and shows battle scars and has not complained once. My *ist D - over 13000 exposures and no complaints.
My cameras have seen rain, snow, heat, humidity, tropics, desert, and some of them have been dropped, bumped and such (tools, not jewels) and they keep producing.
No complaints, just enjoyment,
